Rihanna’s new single Umbrella has broke the record for the highest number of downloads in a debut week on the world’s biggest online music store iTunes.
The track has so far notched up an impresive 276,000 downloads after just a week on iTunes, and that has surpassed sales of both Shakira’s Hips Don’t Lie and Sexy Back from Justin Timberlake as the biggest debut ever on the store.
Rihanna is enjoying big success with the first track of her new album Umbrella topping the charts at home, and overseas and in heavy rotation on national radio and music television.
The track has gone to number one on the Billboard 100, Pop 100 and the Hot Digital Songs charts. The track has also given Rihanna her first number one in the UK, where it’s just stayed for a second week, is the top video download on iTunes and on the AOL Music Top 40 Videos Chart. In her U.S television debut, Rihanna will perform the song live with Jay-Z at the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, June 3rd.
Umbrella is one of the feature tracks off Rihanna’s third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad, which will be released to fans in stores on June 5.
To promote her new material, the hottie will be making a number of television appearances. She is to appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on the day of release, NBC’s The Today Show on June 8, The View and MTV’s TRL on the 11th June, as well as giving a live performance at the globally broadcast Live Earth concert on July 7th.
So you can expect to see a lot of Rihanna in the weeks and months ahead.
Rihanna has been in the UK promoting her new single which has just gone to number 1 in the UK single charts. The sultry singer also put in a great live performance of her track Umbrella at the Radio 1 Big Weekend Concert in Preston. We’ve posted some photos below.

The killer track, which features Jay-Z, went straight to the top of the charts because of massive digital sales.
Umbrella, ella, ella eh eh, beat Maroon 5’s Makes Me Wonder which rose to Number 2. McFly will be disappointed as they fell from 1 to 20 with Baby’s Coming Back.
